Over time, the speed of computers with Microsoft Windows or any other OS can decrease. This appears as the system taking more time to respond to a user’s actions like opening files, folders, surfing the Internet and other tasks. However, there are things you can do to speed up your computer.

We know that increase computer speed is basically achieving the computer speed and performance consistency. Most of the computer problems are the result of viruses, spywares and the registry overload. If proper care is taken in addition to hardware maintenance check, computer performance can be stabilized. No one can afford to lose important data just because of poor computer maintenance. The following steps are provided to help you improve the computer speed performance and increase the life period of your system. The following is a list of ways you can improve your computer's performance. These steps are intended to be used in order. The key is to do the simplest and least invasive thing first until your system starts responding better.

1. Remove junk files You don't even have to click a "Save" button once while using your computer to accumulate junk files. Simply checking emails, setting your computer to hibernate or surfing the web will build up junk files on your computer. One way to clean them up and speed up your computer is to run the Windows inbuilt "Disk Cleanup" utility. To do that go to Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Disk Cleanup. You can also get third party programs that can find and delete even more junk files. These include:
Auslogics BoostSpeed Wise Disk Cleaner Pro

2. The temp directory can quickly fill up with hundreds of temp files over time, which can slow things down immensely. To delete Temp files, you must first make sure that NO programs are open. If you are using Windows 95, 98 or Me, go to C:WindowsTemp and delete everything inside the Temp folder. If you are using Windows 2000 or XP, the process is a bit trickier. First, you must make sure that you can see hidden folders. To do this, double-click on My Computer. Click on the Tools pull-down menu, and then click on Folder Options. Click on the View tab. Scroll down and click on Show Hidden Files and Folders. click Ok. Now you can go to C:Documents and SettingsUSERLocal SettingsTemp folder and delete everything there.

3) Defrag Your Computer Defragging your hard drive pulls together all of the fragmented files that are scattered all over the place, making them easier and quicker for your computer to open. To defrag your hard drive, go to Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk Defragmenter. Before defragging, make sure to turn off your screen saver and the standby power option if you are using them. Because defragging can take so long, I installed a free auto defragging app and have it set to run at night every two weeks.

4. Disabling auto-start applications Many programs will set themselves to auto-start when you boot your computer, even though you might only use them once a month. These background applications can take up a lot of RAM. That's why disabling the auto-start option for programs you don’t need can do a lot to speed up your computer. To check for unnecessary auto-start programs: Click Start. If you use XP or any other windows, go to Run and type msconfig, if you use Vista simply type it in the search box in the Start menu. Go to the Startup tab. Uncheck any boxes for programs you don't use regularly. Note that you can still open these programs on request - they just won't auto-load on boot up. If you are using Windows Vista or Windows 7, you can also go to the Startup folder under All Programs in the Start menu. If you see any programs in the list that you don’t need, simply right-click on them and choose to delete them from the list. Don't worry, they won't be uninstalled from your computer. Cleaning up your registry with CCleaner can trim your startup time, too. Don't stray too far from the program's default settings, though, or you can damage programs and Windows

5. Increase your RAM The ram is important part to increase the speed of computer If you only have 1 or 2GB of RAM and do a lot of multitasking, upping your RAM to 4GB is a sensible upgrade. When programs and files in current use fill up your available RAM, the computer processor has to read data from the much slower hard disk.

6.Clean Your Desktop Is your Windows Desktop dotted with files or sortcut they aren't more usefull? You Have noticed that your computer has been running slower and slower. Do you see the hard drive light often flashing while you wait for the computer to respond to an action? There are steps you can take to fix it.

7) Run Anti-Virus Software I have my free anti-virus software running on auto update and scan and I have not had a problem for a long time. The only times I have had computer virus issues is when I did not update my anti-virus software, which is why now I always have the auto update and scan running.
If your anti-virus software does not include spyware detection, you could have little critters in there slowing your system down. Again, there are plenty of free versions available. Search for "free anti-spyware software" and pick one of them.

8) Remove Unnecessary Software Remember all those icons that were on your desktop when you first bought your computer? You probably eventually ended up deleting most of them to tidy things up or because they were programs you didn't need. Guess what? Unless you removed the software as well as the desktop icon, they are all still taking up space on your hard drive. You could also have software that was secretly installed when you downloaded toolbar add ons or file-sharing programs. To remove these unwanted programs, click on Start then Control Panel. Click on Add or Remove Programs and take a look at what is lurking around.

(a) Cool your machine: If your computer suddenly starts operating very slowly, check to see if the case feels overly-hot. Especially in hot climates, make sure the computer has adequate air-flow around it. Overheating causes myriad difficulties and the computer bays in most work desks do not provide sufficient air-flow.

9) Increase Virtual Memory Settings While buying and installing more RAM will probably speed up your computer better than any of the above tips, I have to stick to the "free" theme of this article. Increasing your virtual memory capacity on your hard drive can work as a temporary fix once you have run out of RAM memory. How much virtual memory Windows will use can be adjusted. Go to Start, Control Panel, System, click on the Advanced tab and then Settings under Performance. Click on the Advanced tab then Change under Virtual Memory. Under paging file size, increase the maximum size by 500 MB, click Set and see if that makes a difference. Installing extra RAM is the best way to go but increasing the virtual memory can help until you buy and install the extra RAM.

10. Reinstall the Operating System At last If you have done all the above steps and your computer does not become more responsive, you might consider reinstalling the operating system and programs. This is a scorched earth option - basically you backup all your data and user settings, wipe your hard drive clean and re-install the operating system with your original disks. Next, install all your favorite programs and restore all your data and user settings.By this your speed is definatly increase. so enjoy.........
